Statement on Passage of Bush Tax Cut

Date: May 9, 2003
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Taxes

Today's $550 billion tax cut approved by the House of Representatives brings the combined 10-year cost of the Bush tax cuts to over $2 trillion dollars. Two years since passage of Bush's first tax cuts, working families across the country can't see any evidence of the economic growth promised by President Bush's failed economic policies.

While the Bush administration devotes its energies to cutting taxes for the wealthy, 2.7 million Americans have lost their jobs over the past two years and nearly 75 million Americans have gone without health insurance at some point over those same two years. These men, women and families are terrified for their future, and they don't see how a third round of tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans will change their situation.

We can do better. I want to give people a different choice. I want to repeal all the failed Bush tax cuts and replace them with a bold, new proposal to cover everyone in America with quality health insurance and jump start the economy with the resulting economic stimulus. This plan is morally right and economically sensible. It's the right thing to do for all Americans.
